Polycystic Kidney Disease Illustration

Thursday, August 19th, 2010

Polycystic kidney disease is a genetic disease that causes  fluid filled sacs called cysts to develop in the kidneys. Cyst development begins in the nephron, the filtering unit of the kidney, when a cell carrying the genetic mutation proliferates. The wall of the cyst is formed by proliferation of the mutated cell and cellular processes draw fluid into the cyst. The cyst continues to enlarge and eventually breaks away from the nephron. The growth of cysts causes the kidney to enlarge and disrupts kidney function. There are two types of PKD, autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive. Individuals with the autosomal dominant PKD tend to develop symptoms between the ages of 30-40, autosomal recessive PKD is rare and it causes symptoms to develop in utero or within the first months of life.

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney disease lists PKD as the fourth leading cause of kidney failure. According the Polycystic Kidney Disease Foundation even though PKD is more common than the genetic conditions cystic fibrosis, sickle cell anemia and Down’s syndrome there is very little public awareness about it. There is currently no cure for Polycystic kidney disease.

I might use this sketch to create a finished piece

I made this stomach in Illustrator with the gradient mesh tool. I’m thinking of using this to make an interactive activity so that I can practice using Flash.

Right now I’m working on a digital painting of? polycystic kidneys, I won’t have anytime to work on them until next week because I will be camping in the Adirondacks. I listened to a Radiolab episode about parasites a few days ago while I was working on this project and I think my next project will be about parasites.

Polar Bear Painting

I finally finished this last week.

I started listening to an excellent podcast called? Big Illustration Party Time. It inspired me to get out of my artistic slump and it has a lot of tips about the business and marketing side of illustration and improving your artwork. There is an episode called Nut Party that has a great interview with David Ehlert of Cognition Studio.  Also check out their blog and companion podcast Big Illustration Party Time Hangover.
